Edward Yoon, student of Carole Kriewaldt and Scott Beard, won the grand prize ($1500) in the Frederick Optimist Club Competition, performing Benjamin Lee's Fantasia for piano.

George Fu, student of Dr. Scott Beard and Jesse Wong, won the National MTNA Senior High Piano Duet Competition. They competed against five other teams at the MTNA National Conference in Denver. The $2,000 first prize was donated by Kawai Corporation.

Pianist Scott Beard to perform in inaugural concert for the newly formed Two Rivers Symphony Orchestra.  Dr. Beard will be performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto, K. 488 on March 15, 2008 in the Frank Center Theater on the campus of Shepherd University.  Call 303-876-5555 for more information.

Dr. Scott Beard was selected as a presenter at the College Music Society’s Super Regional Conference for the East Coast area.  He will be presenting a lecture-recital entitled:  “Where East Meets West:  Contemporary Chinese Piano Music,” featuring works by Chen Yi, Tan Dun, and others at the Sunderman Conservatory on the Campus of Gettysburg College on April 4, 2008.

 

Dr. Beard was a featured guest artist in the “Keyed Up for Winter” series at Mansfield University.  He presented a solo concert on February 4th that included works by Mozart, Tan Dun, Lowell Libermann and Chopin.  The next day he conducted a masterclass on the Teaching, Music and Life of Theodor Leschetizky..

Dr. Scott Beard presented a workshop on “The Intermediate Student 6-60” at the 50th Anniversary conference of the Maryland State Music Teachers Association, held at the University of Maryland College Park

 

Recent Student Accomplishments

George Fu was the WINNER of the National Symphony Young Soloists Competition.  George will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the National Symphony on May 20th at the Kennedy Center!

George Fu and Leah Claiborne were selected to perform in a masterclass for renowned pianist Leon Fleisher on February 1st at the Strathmore Arts Center.  Leah performed Debussy’s “L’isle joyeuse” and George performed Ravel’s “Ondine” from Gaspard de la Nuit.

Congratulations to George Fu and Jesse Wong (student of Nancy Breth) who won the Eastern Division Senior High Piano Duet Competition.  They will compete at the MTNA National Conference in Denver on March 29th.  They will perform works by Bach, Mendelssohn and Samuel Barber.

George Fu was awarded alternate in the Senior High Piano Competition at the Eastern Division Competition held at Penn State University on January 12th.  Also competing beautifully in the senior high competition was Leah Claiborne!  Congratulations.

George Fu and Leah Claiborne have been busy this summer, taking coachings with master teachers from Juilliard, Eastman and the Manhattan School of music. 

George Fu was a semi-finalist in the Oberlin International Piano Competition, Third Place and audience prize at the International Institute for Young Musicians piano competition in Kansas and First Prize winner in the senior division of the International Young Artists Piano Competition in Washington, DC

Jason Solounias was second prize winner in the collegiate division of the International Young Artists Piano Competition in Washington, DC, held at the Catholic University of America.
